Newly Elected Officers Sworn In Local 535 statewide officers take the oath of office from executive director David Kramer, l to r, Annette Jeffries, president; Penny Donovan, northern vice president; Janet Atkins, first vice-president; Rhonda Goode, southern vice president; Marilyn Shepherd-Leake, secretary; Elvira Dominguez, central vice president; and Terri Perez, treasurer. Jeffries hopes to bring a new perspective to 535’s leadership. “Our priorities have to include broader political action,” says Jeffries. First order of political business, says Jeffries, will be implementation of Senate Bill 2030 to lower social worker caseloads. Jeffries also intends to push for legislation to increase wages for 535’s lowest paid members. “We need to do whatever it takes to bring up members’ wages and improve working conditions. We need to make our voices heard both in the workplace and in the political arena. I will go wherever our banner needs to be lifted, wherever I can be of use.” Jeffries has been a union activist both locally and internationally. She was secretary of the SEIU Caucus for People of African Descent, president of the Los Angeles County Chapter, statewide southern vice president, and LA County Chapter chief grievance officer for two terms, and has been a 535 member political organizer. |
