I like to mix lectures with hands-on experience and mix computer skills with mechanical abilities. Everything is computerized these days, but I have a couple of broken down relays, and we give them a chance to get out their amp meters and volt meters to troubleshoot them. The opportunity inspires them and makes the class fun.

One of the hardest thing for the students to understand is split phase motors. For that we have a ferris wheel with lights that go on and off as it rotates around to give them an example of how an armature works.
