Pile Drivers Apprentice Training Program, Carpenters Training Committee for Northern California

Organized Labor

“Everyone wants to think their trade is the best,” welding instructor Steve Tilton explains. “We may rib each other on the job in a good-natured way. But we have to work together and keep each other safe. I taught a rigging class the other day. We had six journeymen and six apprentices. We had carpenters, millwrights and pile drivers learning together, and the apprentices got to hear the journeymen cross-reference the different aspects of each of their trades. It was one of the best rigging classes we ever had.”

The apprenticeship training is a 4-year program. The center also offers upgrade classes for journeymen and welding classes, including welding certification. These classes are open to all the UBC trades.
