Racial equality was a goal of the Lincoln Brigade. The brigades were integrated, and Oliver Law, one of the commanders, was the first black officer to command white troops. In contrast, during World War II the American army suffered from segregation.

McDaniels was a legendary labor organizer. He was photographed at a senior citizens power rally in Sacramento in 1982. Archival photo from the Tamiment Library, Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, NYU.
