Campaign for a New American Foreign Policy July 2003 California Peace Action, the state’s largest grassroots peace and justice lobby, is working on its Campaign for a New American Foreign Policy. This campaign challenges the Bush administration’s reckless foreign policy by outlining a different vision for our future. The executive board of SEIU 535 officially endorsed the campaign, joining the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, State Senator Richard Alarcon, and many others. Peace Action proposes the following: In the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th and in light of war with Iraq, our country needs a new approach to its relations with the rest of the world. We need an approach that will lead toward greater security rather than toward endless military conflicts. The U.S. should lead the world in stemming the spread of conventional weapons. The U.S. should initiate a global campaign to address the threat from weapons of mass destruction by securing and dismantling the existing stockpiles. The U.S. should lead in cooperative efforts to address global problems, not obstruct efforts to address them. The Campaign for a New American Foreign Policy is a long-term campaign aimed at demonstrating to Democrats and Republicans alike that the American people insist on a more constructive path for our nation. To build political pressure on members of Congress, this campaign has several specific goals, including asking organizations and local and state elected officials to formally endorse the Three Point Platform of the campaign. Already multiple Democratic clubs, labor unions and elected officials across the state have endorsed it. The executive board urges local 535 members to let your congressional representatives know that you support the Campaign for a New American Foreign Policy. Write them a letter at House of Representatives /Washington, DC 20515. For other ways to take action, please visit California Peace Action’s website at www.californiapeaceaction.org.
